According to the American Heart Foundation: “Nearly 78 million adults and 13 million children in the United States deal with the health and emotional effects of obesity every day.”

Man!… Stop Procrastinating… Yeah Dude, I mean You. Bro- I hate to be calling you out like this, but it is for a good reason. Aren’t you finally ready to make “The Commitment” to Yourself? I am especially talking to Men who haven’t been swept up by Oprah’s latest Weight Watcher’s promotion. Those wall-to-wall Nutrisystem commercials featuring a beautifully reconstructed Marie Osmond aren’t doing it for you, either?

A little over a year ago I decided to Commit to Getting Fit. At age 50+, it wasn’t an easy thing to do. Now, I am starting to see some solid results, I plan to extend a most valuable invitation- the #GetFitChallenge– to all who are willing to accept it.

Of course, Women- you are not only welcome to participate, but your help and support is vital. Beyonce’s recent Grammy performance was just a reminder of how important Mothers are to the World. None of us would be here without them. This year let’s make it Official that, as much as we should stop harassing the Obese, there is also no shame in trying to be Healthy. …Even Men.

In Winter 2013, my older sister was unexpectedly hospitalized before Christmas while trying to lose weight on Juicing Diet. She suffered from a severe Diabetic Coma which- had it not been caught in time- could have led to her death.

She pushed me to get tested for almost a year, before I finally got diagnosed with Diabetes 2 in the Fall of 2014. At that time, my Hemoglobin A1c was a mere .001 Percentage point away from needing to go on Diabetic Medication myself. Fun!?  Like many of you, I was told by my Doctor that I needed to lose weight, eat healthier and cut out as much Salt and Sugar from my diet as possible. This didn’t seem to be compatible with my career as a BBQ Chef/ Instructor… However, the Doc said that limiting Calories would extend my life. Even Monkeys could be trained to do it…

Calorie restriction lets monkeys live long and prosper

Try to fill up with as many fresh Veggies as you can, along with proteins like Grilled Chicken.

Thus, my journey to get back to Fitness began. Over the past several years I have tried almost any and everything to lose weight. The first months I ate low calorie Frozen Entrees for Lunch everyday. In the meantime, I struggled with severe back problems in order to exercise with less pain. This led me to conventional Physical Therapy, as well as Chiropractic and Acupuncture treatments. I also started Jogging back to the Gym, the Tennis Court and learning Pilates.

Many Doctors and Fitness Experts say that: “Abs are Made in the Kitchen, not the Gym”. I dare say, I would also like to add that “Abs can start on the Grill”. By following this advice, I have been able lose 40 lbs. in the past year. I will share my progress with you as we go. For the Record- overall Fitness is measured by BMI (Body Mass Index), not just on the scale.
